Regional School Unit 57
Title: Custodian
Qualifications:
- High School education or equivalent
- Ability to use/maintain equipment and machines
- Some knowledge of use and handling of cleaning chemicals
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, parents, community and school personnel
- Ability to use technology (email, timesheet review software, etc.)
Reports to: Head Custodian or Lead Custodian
Job Goal:
- Maintain the overall cleanliness of the school or facility, including all cleaning and sanitizing, minor repairs and maintenance
- Develops and promotes good community relations among various community and school clientele
Performance Responsibilities:
- Cleans assigned areas of the facility, including classrooms, hallways, rest rooms, and common areas (See attached: Cleaning Procedures)
- Performs general maintenance tasks related to the upkeep and operation of the facility
- Sees to the general security of the facility during regular shift, making sure doors are locked and secured, etc
- Reports to the Head Custodian (or Lead Custodian at smaller schools) and informs them of any building maintenance concerns that would require additional support from Building Maintenance Department
- Takes part in any or all parts of snow removal: shoveling, snow blowing/plowing, sand/salt treatment of walkways
- During the summer months, performs total cleaning and general maintenance of the building. May be assigned to any crew for general district projects as necessary
- Observes all district policies and procedures
- There are times when working conditions require exposure to cold or warm temperatures for extended periods of time
- Under the supervision of the Head or Lead custodian, will assist in the setup of Special Events
- Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time

The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, climb stairs, climb ladders; constant lifting of 5-20 pounds, frequent lifting 20 to 50 pounds, some lifting of up to 75 lbs; frequent bending, reaching, squatting, climbing and kneeling; occasional crawling, sitting, stooping as well as perform other physical tasks that may be required from time to time.
Terms of Employment: Hourly, work year. Working conditions to be established by the RSU 57 School Board.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation.
