Description
SUMMARY:  Library Assistants handle the day-to-day duties of the library-media center. Library Assistants assist teachers and students needing to use the materials provided in the library-media center.

Salary Range: $16.40- $23.90

 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Other duties may be assigned.        

  • Circulate books and materials to students and staff.
  • Manage the patron data base.
  • Reshelf all materials in correct alphabetical and Dewey order.
  • Assist students and staff to locate library-media materials.
  • Read and share literature with all grade levels.
  • Present prepared library curriculum.
  • Send out and follow up on all overdue notices to students and staff.
  • Process the arrival of new books and materials in a timely manner.
  • Notify students and staff of new materials.
  • Keep the library-media center clean, organized and attractive.
  • Make minor book repairs.
  • Enjoy working with students and staff.           

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises and trains parent volunteers.  Assist teacher in supervising students.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Three years post secondary education or 90 credit hours of approved study in a related area. 
 
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
 
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
 
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Previous work in child care.   Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Committee policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to push items of 50 lbs such as pushing children on a bike or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.
