Description

Old Town Elementary School seeks a skilled, student-focused, and motivated applicant to serve students in the upper elementary grade span. This position will serve students starting in the fall of 2025.

OTES is a kindergarten through 5th grade elementary school with about 500 students enrolled. There is a strong culture of communication, collaboration, and care among staff, students, and families. The school fosters student growth through unique and varied experiences for the students, strong instructional programming, and dedicated staff doing what’s best for students. The following expectations are part of this role:

School Counselor Job Responsibilities

  • Works in partnership with OTES lower elementary and other district School Counselors.
  • Teaches regularly scheduled guidance classes based on curriculum.
  • Leads curriculum development for upper elementary guidance classes
  • Advises and counsels students regarding short-term functional, educational, and social and emotional problems.
  • Hosts planned individual and small group activities to support students regarding functional, educational, and social and emotional problems.
  • Prepares for responsive and as-needed services to support students and their families.
  • Offers workshops for staff and families. 
  • Works closely with classroom teachers to develop strategies that support students’ emotional well-being and school success. 
  • Facilitates and maintains proactive and reactive communication with families, staff, administrators, community partners, and state agents.
  • Provides feedback and recommends appropriate actions and solutions for individual student’s needs. 
  • Participates actively in the OTES attendance team. 
  • Leads the OTES Civil Rights Team.
  • Appropriately refers students to behavioral health specialists as needed.
  • Communicates, coordinates, and collaborates with behavioral health specialists on developing and implementing student supports.
  • Supports and attends appropriate student activities and events.

School Counselor Qualifications/Skills

  • Desire and ability to work with students at the specified age level with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability toward accomplishing their functional and educational goals.
  • Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines and communicate effectively with all parties, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive.
  • Knowledge of technology platforms to support communication with staff and families, as well as maintain plans, documentation, and data. 

Education, Experience, and Certification Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling/Guidance, Education, or Social Work
  • Minimum of 1 year of school counseling or teaching experience
  • Current Maine teaching certification required
