At Summer at Breakwater, outdoor Expeditions leaders, also known as trip leaders, are responsible for planning and leading overnight and day camp outdoor adventures, and for teaching participants outdoor skills while also helping them to build friendships and practice their social-emotional skills in challenging environments.
Trip leaders will:
- Participate in all pre-camp training, both with the Expeditions team and with the on-campus team
- Scout, prepare and inspect trip locations and equipment under the guidance of the Expeditions Coordinator
- Transport: Trip leaders are the primary providers of transportation on our outdoor adventures. The Expeditions Coordinator will provide extraction transport if needed
- Teach participants outdoor activities like rock climbing, backpacking, kayaking, paddleboarding, biking and canoeing
- Lead trips, manage group dynamics, and ensure the safety of participants
- Support campers at all times during the trip, providing environmental awareness, mentoring participants, and helping them develop their skills
- Handle routine medical issues, manage risk, and plan menus
- Assist Expeditions Coordinator in keeping equipment in good working order: Communicate in a timely manner with the Coordinator should anything need to be repaired or replaced
- Be willing to assist Summer Admin staff in communicating with the larger community about our Expeditions, through catalogs, advertising campaigns, etc.
- Submit incident reports and end-of-trip reports to Expeditions Coordinator
Summer at Breakwater Expeditions are known for our small group sizes, our emphasis on inclusion, and our ability to foster lasting relationships through all of our summer programming. The ideal trip leader will be an outdoor enthusiast with a passion for the activities included in their expeditions and also an effective educator of diverse campers. Requirements include Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification, State of Maine Educational Trip Leader Permit (can be obtained in the spring of 2025), as well as a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
