Mount Desert Island Regional School System AOS 91

Special Services District Administrator 
(prior experience as a Special Services Administrator preferred)

Start Date:  July 1, 2025

The preferred candidate will:

  • Hold or be eligible for Maine Administrator Certificate 030 or 035
  • Have required knowledge of IDEA, Chapter 101 Maine Unified Special Education Regulations, and Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act along with the eligibility criteria for each
  • Ensure that students with disabilities in MDIRSS-AOS #91 are identified and receive appropriate services and that all state and federal laws relating to special education and Section 504 compliance are followed
  • Have experience in strengthening early childhood education and special education programming for preschool students ages 2 through 4
  • Have a strong understanding of behavioral needs and programming for preschool through high school age students
  • Have knowledge of, develop, and coordinate individualized programming and group special services and related service components throughout the system
  • Monitor the IEP Team process in each building and serve as chairperson when appropriate
  • Have knowledge of areas such as interpretation of psycho-educational tests, prescriptive teaching methodologies, curriculum, materials, and progress monitoring
  • Complete and oversee all federal grants that pertain to special education funding
  • Assume coordination responsibilities of MDIRSS-AOS #91 special services staff
  • Consult with building principals in the development of special education budgets
  • Perform personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, evaluating, supervising, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel, and meeting the needs of our students
  • Collaborate with other district personnel (e.g. school and district office administrators, faculty, staff, etc.) as well as parents for the purpose of implementing and /or maintaining special services and programs
  • Be adept at relationship/rapport building, conflict resolution strategies, and team building methods and techniques
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate student programming and staff development
  • Attend and/or facilitate a wide variety of meetings as needed or assigned (e.g. trainings, hearings, team meetings, workshops, in-service programs, etc.) for the purpose of providing or receiving information
