Description: Special Education Teacher - Moderate to Severe
Certification Qualifications: Certification as a Special education teacher (282) or qualified to be certified within the first year.
Description: Vinalhaven is seeking a Special Education Teacher for our students with moderate to severe disabilities (i.e. autism, intellectual delay, ADHD with behavior difficulties). The Special Education teacher is responsible for overseeing the delivery of services in students’ Individualized Education Plan and providing specialized instruction to ensure that each student progresses in meeting IEP goals. The ability to relate positively to students, parents, and staff is essential to this position.
Support Provided: We have a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who consult directly with the teacher in this position to assist with teaching and behavior intervention programs. The part-time director of special education meets regularly with the teacher and behavior analyst of this position to problem-solve regarding student and staff needs. We have a special education consultant who provides oversight for reading, writing and math interventions as well as support and supervision for writing IEPs and Written Notices.
Required Experience: Working with student with moderate to severe disabilities, including behavior difficulties.
Major Responsibilities:
- Provide evidenced-based specially designed instruction to students with IEP’s to ensure that each student progresses in meeting their learning targets.
- Serve as case manager (IEP development and process, Written Notices, academic assessments, Positive Behavioral Support Plans) and oversee each student’s IEP, ensuring compliance with requirements in the Maine Unified Special Education Regulations – Chapter 101 including timelines related to the IEP process and IEP development.
- Supervise implementation of behavior intervention plans for students, including data collection.
- Consult with regular education teachers on a regular basis regarding educational needs, accommodations and modifications.
- Collaborate with related service providers (speech therapists, OT, PT, social workers, etc.)
- Collaborate with Behavior Analyst and Special Education Consult regarding teaching and behavior intervention programs
- Communication regularly with parents/guardians
- Supervision of educational technicians in the program
