Our new Summer at Breakwater Expeditions Coordinator will be part of our Summer Administration Team and will report directly to the Director of Summer Programs.

The Expeditions Coordinator is responsible for safety, training and supervision of 8 weeks of staff training and multiple adventure trips led by two teams of Trip Leaders and Counselors.

The Expeditions Coordinator will:

  • Lead the planning and preparation of outdoor overnight and campus based adventure activities. Build and maintain relationships with internal and external land management officials, regulatory officials, recreation vendors and guides
  • Lead and facilitate onsite (in the field) and on-campus training for the Expeditions team in coordination with the Summer Director
  • Create a connection with each camper and parent group prior to the expedition and debrief with groups and staff after the expedition
  • Complete required documentation in a timely, effective manner
  • Be responsible for purchasing gear in coordination with the larger Enrichment program, and for keeping gear clean, organized and in working conditions
  • Facilitate initiatives and team building activities during training days, and whenever needed during the summer season
  • Attend regular meetings, participates in ongoing trainings, assist with program trainings, etc
  • Assist Summer Director and other Admin staff in maintaining summer vehicles and managing vehicle use schedule

The Expeditions Coordinator supervises the work of field staff during the summer, offering performance management, professional development and training.

The Expeditions Coordinator reports to and works closely with the Summer Director both prior to and during the 8 weeks of Summer Camp. This Coordinator works under minimal supervision and relies on experience, knowledge, and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned goals. The right candidate will be adept at working with a diverse group of staff and campers and prepared to engage in intercultural competency training and ongoing conversations.

 

Education/Equivalent 

Must be at least 25 years of age; bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience

 

Certificates/Licenses
Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician, or Wilderness First Responder; must have had Crisis Prevention Institute’s NVCI or equivalent training in the past 12 months (or willingness to obtain this training); clean driving records and valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, & Experience

Two years of experience in adventure/wilderness programs; working knowledge of relevant regulations and licensing standards; must be mature, patient in stressful/crisis situations, and display strong communication and leadership skills


Physical Requirements

Carrying up to 60 pounds, reaching, bending, and climbing; mastery of primitive living skills required, as well as hiking, biking, paddling

 

Decision-Making Responsibilities

Includes best judgment regarding the immediate physical health, safety, and welfare of participants; supervises employees; schedules and monitors activities; coordinates outside care as needed; determines regular and emergency admissions in collaboration with other Admin; plans own time in carrying out assigned duties; needs to make sound decisions quickly during emergency situations
