Qualifications and Description:

  • A student support specialist provides behavioral and academic supports for students. It is a teaching position. The student support specialist is responsible for providing coaching supports for teachers and support staff as well as interventions and supports for students with behavioral challenges. The student support specialist is also responsible for leading, coaching, and supporting the building-wide PBIS system.
  • Must hold one of the following certifications: Assistant Building Administrator (045), Maine General Elementary Endorsement (K-8) (020), or a School Counselor Certificate (075)
  • (045) and (020) is preferred.
  • Must hold a current Maine Criminal History Records Check Certificate. 
  • Experience working with K-8 students, particularly students who struggle in school behaviorally and/or academically.
  • Organizes and teaches small group work around social skills and academic skills and other topics as assigned.
  • Assist teachers with the integration of social skills lessons into classrooms.
  • Be able to develop, implement and follow through with behavior plans/interventions (including behavioral RTI Interventions such as check-in, check-out.)
  • Provide Tier II and Tier III RTI behavioral and academic interventions as assigned.
  • Consult with the district’s behavioral consultant.
  • Consult and assist staff in designing behavioral plans and academic interventions.
  • Provide leadership and coaching to staff and students around bullying prevention, positive behavior supports, and Second Step social skills lessons.
  • Works with the principal to manage and/or investigate minor daily behavioral incidents.
  • Familiarity with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports preferred (PBIS).
  • Familiarity with Restorative Practices preferred.
  • Serves as the building 504 Coordinator.
  • Serves on RTI teams.
  • Other similar duties as assigned.
