Director of Special Services

Serving Two School Departments in Rural Coastal Maine

The Hancock and Lamoine School Departments are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Special Services to oversee and coordinate
special education programs across two districts with a combined enrollment of approximately 500 students. This leadership role is responsible
for ensuring compliance with state and federal special education regulations while supporting inclusive, high-quality education for all students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of special education programming, Section 504 services, and related support services across both districts.
  • Ensure compliance with IDEA, Maine DOE regulations, and other applicable laws and policies.
  • Provide leadership and professional development for special education staff, administrators, and general education teachers.
  • Develop and manage special education budgets, ensuring appropriate allocation of resources.
  • Collaborate with families, educators, and community partners to foster student success.
  • Supervise the referral, evaluation, and IEP?504 plan development processes.
  • Advocate for best practices in inclusive education and differentiated instructions.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • Maine DOE certification as a Special Education Director (030) or eligibility for certifications.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in special education administration or leadership.
  • Strong knowledge of special education laws, best practices, and instructional strategies.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
