Job Title: Youth Support Specialist (YSS)

Supervisor: Program Manager

Employment Status: Part-time

 

Position summary:  

The Apex Youth Support Specialist is a part-time position that reports directly to the Program Manager.  The YSS provides support to and for any student in Apex programming. 

 

The YSS is responsible for being available to youth on an as-needed basis.  The YSS may assist in implementing program curriculum, and/or by supporting students through challenges so curriculum can continue for other students.  The YSS is responsible for building strong and multi-dimensional relationships with participating Apex youth, delivering curriculum as assigned and/or needed, working with staff to build out programs as well as to enhance and expand current curriculum, including implementation of that expanded and enhanced curriculum.  The YSS will collect and maintain data around outputs and measurable outcomes that quantify and qualify the effectiveness and impact of all Apex programs as requested and assigned.   

 

The schedule is typically Monday through Friday from 1:30PM-6:00PM, though the Specialist may attend staff meetings and may be requested to work as needed on evenings and weekends.  THe YSS must pass a criminal history background check.

 

Essential responsibilities:

  1. Ongoing implementation of Apex programs and curriculum
  2. Assist in recruiting, training, onboarding, and supporting volunteer mentors
  3. Supporting, guiding, mentoring, and training individual participating youth 
  4. Collect and maintain consistent, effective, and individualized measurements of progress for participants across all programs.
  5. Working with  Program Manager (PM) and Administrative Coordinator (AC), use measurements of progress to determine skill development targets (Individual Development Plan) for each youth as relevant
  6. Work with PM & AC to increase the number of participants served, the frequency of participation, the length of participation, and the impact of service delivery across all Apex job programs.
  7. Assist the PM in developing programs for youth based on their opinions and needs and  support outreach activities.

 

  1. Serve as an agent in fulfilling Apex’s mission and core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, safety and learning.
  2. Effectively communicate with the PM & AD, and other staff, interns, volunteers, and families/parents/guardians
  3. Engage youth in maintaining a safe, clean facility
  4. Compile monthly participant data as requested
  5. Attend annual training in order to maintain credentials and learn best practices
  6. Develop presentations, trainings or other opportunities to increase organizational and program visibility, preferably by integrating youth wherever possible
  7. Complete accident/incident reports as needed and directed
  8. Ensure compliance with all Apex Risk Management, policies and procedures, as well as state licensing and permitting as directed by PM & AC.

 

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with youth in educational, recreational, or community settings.
  • Familiarity with bike maintenance and repair is a plus, but not required.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with youth and their families.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire young people, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for youth development.

Certifications:

  • First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain within the first months of employment.
  • Background check clearance, including child safety and protection standards.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (e.g., bicycles, tools).
  • Comfortable working outdoors and in a bike shop environment.
