Associate Director of Residential Life
Purpose:
To promote a living environment and experience in which Fryeburg Academy boarding students will thrive, the Associate Director of Residential Life provides program support that is innovative, supportive, and collaborative. S/he works with an engaged staff and acquaints him/herself with each student in the program, assisting in all aspects of residential life operations: staff training, scheduling; policy and procedure review, development, and implementation; activities-planning and community-building; The Associate Director of Residential Life work schedule includes school day, afternoon, evening, and some weekend responsibilities.
This individual possesses strong interpersonal and organizational skills, understands and enjoys the diversity of needs and experiences inherent in the Academy’s boarding population, and enhances and integrates the residential experience at Fryeburg Academy. The Associate director of Residential Life is an integral member of the residential life team. S/he works closely with the directors’ office, the school’s on-campus therapeutic counselor, and other individuals charged with student life concerns. S/he reports to the Director of Residential Life.
Specific Director duties fall among the following essential functions of the job:
- Assist in the planning and execution of a residential life program that meets the needs of the students and all areas outside of the school day- prioritizing safety, engagement, community, relationships, and wellness.
- Communicate effectively and proactively with boarding students, families, proctors, directors, and school administration
- Administer res. life policies and procedures consistently to ensure the safety and well-being of boarding students and residential staff
- Assist in the administration of discipline related to student conduct in residential contexts; track attendance of residential students, participate in processes relating to major conduct infractions
- Serve as the AOD (administrator on duty) during assigned weeknights
- Assist in the development and execution of preseason and new student orientation activities, to include work with student leaders, Raider Patrol, new students, and returning students with a focus on Residential Life programming
- Take a leadership role and collaborate on the planning and implementation of special community wide events
- Oversee the organization, planning, and execution of the Dorm Olympics
- Assist students as needed i.e. obtaining meals, packing, cleaning, moving, bank applications etc.
- Plan and lead monthly events/activities during night and weekend hours for resident students
- Plan and execute all new student orientations that occur after the start of the school year, including communications with all stakeholders
- Assist with the preparation of dormitories and student information for preseason and school year
- Other duties as assigned
Administration
- Assist in the collection and management of resident student travel arrangements to and from campus for the start of school and breaks
- Work with the resident life team to ensure a successful opening of the dorms in preseason/fall and closing of the dorms at the end of the school year.
- Create and maintain signage in dormitories, dining hall
- Assist managing dormitory lists and making necessary blackbaud updates
- Coordinate communications to resident students regarding meetings and special events.
- Assist in ordering supplies/equipment for the office, dormitories etc.
- Manage organization of ResLife Supplies
- Collect completed dormitory Room Inventory at start of year or when new students arrive
- Record dormitory inventories at the end of the school year
- Prepare and distribute student information packets, keys, door tags etc for preseason and school year
- Ensure that Door Tags are up to date in each dorm throughout the year
- Other duties as assigned
Schedule and time off
- The Associate director of Residential Life works a 12 month schedule with 20 vacation days per year.
- The schedule is highly variable with night, weekend and some holiday responsibilities. As such, the daily and weekly schedule is somewhat flexible. Schedules will be made in collaboration with the Director of Residential Life and Residential Life Associate to ensure adequate coverage.
Skills/Qualifications:
- Min. 5 years in an educational setting
- Master’s Degree preferred
- Demonstrated understanding of adolescent development
- Cultural sensitivity and awareness
- Staff experience in a boarding program
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Sound organizational abilities, including the ability to balance administrative duties and timelines
- Technological proficiency; experience with Google Suite preferred
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive school vehicles
