Job Title:  Assistant Substitute Teacher

Supervisor:  Classroom Teacher/Director

 

Job Summary

You assist with the conduct of daily activities for young children; making sure that the needs of the group as a whole, and the individual children are met.  This position requires working as part of a team, fulfilling teacher's duties when one calls out, communicating effectively with parents, filling the needs of young children, and light janitorial-type duties.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • A current CDA certificate or continued Maine Roads to Quality training towards earning a CDA certificate.
  • Clean background checks through 1.) State of Maine Bureau of Investigation, Maine DHHS, and 2.) Child Protective Services, Maine DHHS.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Greet children and parents actively; make them feel welcome; gather information for the day, and share information with the parent about the child’s day when they depart;
  • Assisting with the planning and conduct of activities for children in the classroom and on the playground;
  • Carrying out discipline in accordance with the BACCC discipline policy;
  • Supervising children outdoors for significant times during the day, year round;
  • Sitting on the floor to interact with children at their level;
  • Walking for distances of up to two miles;
  • Participating in off-site field trips;
  • Completing training in accordance with State regulations and BACCC policy, including on weekends or during evenings, if necessary;
  • Answering the telephone, taking messages, and forwarding calls to the appropriate person;
  • Communicating with other staff, both orally and in writing;
  • Contributing to team work by dealing with other staff respectfully and sharing common duties--following the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct;
  • Completing necessary paperwork (i.e. attendance records, anecdotal observations, developmental assessments, etc.);
  • Demonstrating flexibility when confronted with unplanned events and in work assignments and times;
  • Completing basic janitorial tasks, such as emptying wastebaskets, vacuuming, wiping tables, mopping floors, and cleaning bathrooms, in order to maintain a clean and healthy environment;
  • Changing diapers/pull-ups according to the BACCC diaper changing policy;
  • Conforming to the State of Maine Rules for the Licensing of Child Care Facilities, and the best-practice standards outlined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children;

Other duties as assigned.
