Description

Located in midoast Maine on a beautiful island out in Penobscot Bay, RSU 8 (Vinalhaven School) is a Pre-K-12 school that offers a quality education to its students.

The district has an opening for a full-time Director of Special Services starting July 1, 2025 and is seeking an experienced special educator to oversee the overall administration of special eduation programs and related services.  

Qualifications Desired:

Candidates should have three years Special Education Teaching and possess a Master's Degree in Special Education of Educational Leadership and be certified as a Special Education Administrator (030 Certificate).  Experience in Admistration is preferred and we will hire when a suitable candidate is found.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To be responsible for all state and federal forms, reports, mandates and compliance related to Special Education, 504, ELL, Foster Children, and students that are Homeless.
  2. To work closely with building Principal and the Superintendent, keeping them informed at all times as to recommendations and types of referral services being made to children in the school.
  3. To oversee the recordkeeping of all students serviced by special education and to follow state statute regarding release of said information.
  4. To schedule and chair (as necessary) all IEP Team Meetings and have the authority to commit human and fiscal resources.
  5. To provide for an orderly transition for students serviced by Special Education and from one to the next.  Communicate with regular education teachers, parents, and support personnel about student needs, including transportation services for students who require this service as noted in their IEP.
  6. To work with RSU 8 staff and administration to direct billing for services for tutorial, physical therapy and state agency clietns.
  7. To assist the building principal with staff evaluation, curriculum, program development and in-service programs.
  8. To write and monitor state and federal grants applicable to Special Education.
  9. To be responsible for enforcing FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) requirements.
  10. To be the Section 504 coordinator. (Federal Civil Rights for the Handicapped).
  11. To coordinate Child Find Activities.
  12. To confer with medical professionals for diagnostic analyses of all aspects of a child's handicapping condition.
  13. To accept all referrals for students in Grades K-12 and make provisions to see that an adequate diagnosis is completed to determine need.
  14. To confer with administration, teachers and parents relating diagnostic results and making recommendations and suggestions to serve the best interest of the child involved in conjunction with the IEP Team.
  15. To assume other duties and responsiblilites at the discretion of the Superintendent of Schools.
