Responsibilities
The Summer Camp Counselor plays a critical role in the successful operation of Summer at Breakwater. As a Counselor you will be called on to both support the work of others and lead your own activities. Much will be expected of you in a fast-paced setting, and you will be held in high regard by Teachers, Coordinators and Campers when you come through for yourself and the team. Responsibilities include:
- Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of participants in the program by providing appropriate supervision at all times
- Attend and successfully complete 3 full days (24 hours) of in-person pre-camp training as well as online training in active supervision prior to Training Days.
- Understand, maintain, and ensure that participants follow Risk Management and safety procedures
- Keep the immediate team leader informed daily of any concerns regarding participants, staff, or the facility
- Plan and implement meaningful activities, and special events that are structured, age-appropriate, fun, exciting, challenging, and values-based in the areas of arts, STEM, character development, literacy, creative expression, community service, physical fitness, and nutrition during the morning gathering time, breaks and lunch time.
- Perform specific scheduled assignments, including but not limited to arrival and departure, breaks and lunch duty
- Assist in preparing the learning environment, lessons, and necessary supplies for program activities when requested by immediate team leader
- Assume responsibility for the cleanliness and organization of the camp room, program supplies, and activity space
- Support the implementation of All-Camp activities, including but not limited to summer learning initiatives, field trips, in-camp events, and culminating performances
- Provide support to Teachers with activity implementation
- Work cooperatively with all Summer at Breakwater staff
- Provide guidance and support to Counselor in Training (CITs) and model appropriate professional behavior to CITs at all times
- Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces the diversity of all staff and campers
- Create and maintain a strength-based, youth-focused atmosphere that is consistent and sensitive to the needs of campers with learning, emotional, or physical differences
- Serve as a positive role model for campers
- Maintain accurate program documentation (attendance, sign-in / out forms, behavior reports, incident reports, and accident reports, as appropriate)
- Understand and communicate Breakwater School’s core values and the goals of the Summer at Breakwater program to staff and campers
- Attend all required pre-camp trainings
- Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events
Summer Camp Counselors report directly to the Summer Camp Director, but also serve on teams actively supervised by Teachers and Coordinators. This requires a certain level of maturity and the ability to communicate clearly and in real time.
