Breakwater is seeking an individual to lead an established 8 week summer day camp in Portland, Maine. The camp serves children from 1st - 9th grades in a variety of engaging enrichment opportunities on and off campus.
- This is a year-round salaried position. Hours from May to August are full-time (40 hours), while the hours are part-time from September to April (26 hours).
Position Overview:
Breakwater Summer Camp offers a variety of options for Breakwater students and the wider Portland community in the areas of Science, Athletics, Outdoor Education, and Creative Arts. The Summer Camp Director plays a key role in conceptualizing, developing, and managing all aspects of the 8-week summer camp program.
This position requires full-time, hands-on involvement during the summer camp season. Outside of the camp’s operational weeks, the Director will work on an as-needed basis to meet deadlines for planning and preparing for the upcoming camp year.
Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to,
- Conceptualize and design creative camp offerings
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise teachers, counselors, and counselors-in-training (CITs)
- Foster a positive and collaborative atmosphere for campers, families, and staff
- Ensure the safety of all participants, including employees and campers, throughout their camp experience.
- Represent the camp at camp fairs and community events.
- Oversee or personally handle all camp-related communication, including requests for accommodations for campers with special needs.
- Organize master schedules, assign locations for camp activities, and create teaching schedules.
- Ensure sufficient transportation to all camp offerings and events which are off campus.
- Maintain an up-to-date registration list to monitor enrollment numbers
- Evaluate the camp program by gathering feedback from campers, families, and staff.
- Write, design, and publish all camp-related materials, including the camp catalog and marketing content
- Manage camp budget
Preferred qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- 5 years of directly related professional experience (can include camp, youth development, teaching, and/or supervisory experiences)
- Satisfactory completion of background checks
- Current driver’s license and clean driving record
- Able to lift 40 pounds, haul or drag up to 25 pounds, sit, stand, squat, and otherwise get down on the level of children
Certifications:
- Water safety, CPR and First Aid preferred; not required at time of hire
