Maine Central Institute is looking for a new Director of Plant and Facilities effective November 2024. This is a senior administrative level position reporting directly to the Head of School, with responsibility for maintaining the functionality of a 20 acre independent school facility including all grounds and buildings. The ideal candidate should be an experienced facilities manager who is an intrinsically motivated, detail orientated, team player, with a sense of humor.
Essential Tasks
- Oversee the physical operation of the entire school and its programs.
- Manage the careful maintenance of buildings and grounds and cleaning programs that keep the school’s appearance in exemplary condition.
- Ensure facility readiness for day-to-day events as well as special events.
- Maintain public safety on campus and assist in the review and execution of the school’s crisis management plan.
- Devise and manage an annual departmental budget.
- Supervise staff members within the facilities department: buildings and grounds crew, and custodial staff.
- Arrange bids and develop specifications for all outside contractual work.
- Oversee the work of all outside contractors to ensure compliance with contractual agreements and budgetary restrictions.
- Develop and implement and ongoing equipment replacement program.
- Establish policies and protocol that meet all required environmental, health, and maintenance standards as required by law and work with the administration to ensure compliance with all regional, state, and federal regulations and laws as they impact the school.
- Serve on the administrative team supporting the Head of School and board of trustees.
- Assume responsibility for other projects as assigned by the head of school.
- Skills and Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or related and proven employment experience.
- 5 - 10 years of experience in a supervisory/management role in construction, maintenance/repair; working knowledge of at least three trades is required (maintenance, plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, carpentry, construction).
- Experience with blueprints and building specifications.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Problem solver with a high degree of diplomacy.
