Teacher position, with August 2025 start date, is for PreK through 8 students with individualized curriculum in a one room school house. Enrollment may include Pre-K if a student is deemed ready and the school has capacity. The ideal candidate would have K-8 certification. Additional Pre-K or special education endorsements or willingness to pursue the additional endorsements would be a plus.
Standards-based teaching and learning environment with emphasis on students learning metacognition and social emotional awareness, restorative practices, yoga, mindfulness, and responsive classroom community strategies. A passion for facilitating individualized learning plans and community connected learning projects, including programs that involve outdoor learning and opportunities to engage students in the unique and natural environment of our island are a must.
Strong technology skills are essential as we have laptops, ipads, smartboard, and virtual reality/AV equipment that are critical components to individualizing and enhancing learning in the small remote school.
Teacher arranges for off island field trips, student participation in inter-island literacy groups and events, demonstrations, workshops, and other enrichment programs (conducted by outside artists, experts, and other cultural or scientific groups for the students) into the curriculum. Teacher may also supervise the work schedule of an ed tech if needed based on student population to assists with the delivery of instruction and supervises recess.
Living on the island is required due to transportation limitations. The teacher house is a two bedroom home, rented at a very discounted rental rate. The reduced rent and utilities are paid by the teacher. Walking to and from school is required as there are no personal vehicles on roads on this small island of 4 square miles. School & Community Information: The Monhegan School is a one-room school serving grades pre-K through 8. Three-year-old and/or four-year-old students may be admitted at times of low enrollment. High school students live on the mainland and attend mainland schools of their choosing. Enrollment for the upcoming school year is expected to consist of 2 elementary students. Monhegan Island is located 12 miles from the mainland in midcoast Maine. There are 30-65 year-round residents of Monhegan Plantation. The primary winter employment includes lobstering and property caretaking, and provision of basic services. In summer, the island is a popular destination for artists, hikers, and tourists and the population grows to several hundred.
