QUALIFICATIONS:  Maine Department of Education Criminal History Record Check (CHRC/Fingerprinting) Certification

Education: High school graduate or such alternative qualifications as the School Committee may find appropriate and acceptable.

JOB GOAL: To provide students, staff, and the community at large with safe, clean, attractive, comfortable, and efficient buildings and grounds in which to learn, play and engage in personal growth and development.

Special Knowledge/Skills: Candidate must possess strong organizational skills, the ability to work alone and with others and handle multiple activities in a fast paced environment. Candidate must have the ability to maintain positive relations with students, school personnel, supervisors and citizens at all times. Candidate must have knowledge of, or be willing to learn about chemicals, asbestos management, pesticides, indoor air quality and safety and material safety data sheets. Candidate must have demonstrated aptitude or competence in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, vehicle and grounds repairs. Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license.

Experience: Demonstrated aptitude or competence for successful fulfillment of assigned performance responsibilities.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintenance/Custodial:

  1. Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and determine, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
  2. Regulate heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water and electricity.
  3. Raise the United States flag at or before 8:00 a.m. on each school day and lower it at or after 3:30 p.m. if not illuminated.
  4. Check daily to insure that all exit doors are open and all panic hardware is working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
  5. Maintain a positive relationship at all times with students, school personnel and citizens.
  6. Immediately advise the Head Custodian of maintenance-custodial problems and/or damage within the school buildings.
  7. Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  8. Sweep/vacuum classrooms and dust furniture daily.
  9. Clean corridors after school each day and during the day when their conditions require.
  10. Scrub, hose down and disinfect toilets, floors, sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily, as directed.
  11. Wash all windows on both the inside and outside as necessary.
  12. Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  13. Clean all chalkboards at least once a week.
  14. Make such minor building repairs as he/she is capable of doing.
  15. Report major repairs needed promptly to the Head Custodian.
  16. Maintain, on a regular schedule, all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
  17. Requisition equipment and supplies from the Head Custodian far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in a timely manner.
  18. Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair.
  19. Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Head Custodian.
  20. Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
  21. Remain on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school work hours when the use of the building has been authorized, in use, and when his/her attendance is required.
  22. Assure the use of personal protective gear and equipment when required.
  23. Perform other tasks as may be needed and/or assigned by the Head Custodian, Facilities Manager, Building Principal and/or designee.

Building Repairs:

  1. Perform routine maintenance (as permitted by state law) to include carpentry, plumb-ing, roofing, painting and electrical repairs.
  2. Examine school buildings on a regular basis for needed repairs and maintenance.
  3. Advise the Head Custodian as to the need for services and/or repairs by outside contractors.

Grounds care:

  1. Keep outside premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat, clean and free of rubbish and litter at all times.
  2. Perform shoveling, plowing and/or sanding of walks, driveways, parking areas and steps as appropriate.
  3. Perform such yard-keeping chores as grass cutting, tree trimming and the like, as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
  4. Maintain athletic fields for all sports events to include but not be limited to: field marking, installation/removal of goals, goal posts and other related equipment.
