Lead American Sign Language Interpreter

Hours Needed: Full Time

Baxter Academy, a free public charter high school in Portland, Maine seeks a full time interpreter to work with our small Deaf/Hard of Hearing population. The responsibilities of this position are to support our students in becoming an integral part of the Baxter Academy culture. In addition to interpreting services, this role provides the opportunity to teach one section of ASL. We welcome applicants who are well-experienced or those who may be early in their careers. 

General Job Responsibilities:

• Be able to interpret for Deaf/Hard of Hearing/Hearing students and parents both in the classroom and in parent meetings.
• Demonstrate high quality American Sign Language and spoken English skills.
• Provide effective video relay service, video remote interpreting, and on-site interpreting for students.
• Exhibit professional behavior at all times, including punctuality and preparedness, respectful and collaborative interaction with colleagues and supervisors and timely and accurate record keeping.
• Adhere to all policies and procedures as outlined by the school and Department of Education.
• Multitask between interpreting effectively and utilizing video-based technology.
• Possess the ability to work effectively in a high school environment.
• Must meet regulated licensure and/or state certification requirements or be in process of meeting them.
• Must be able to collaborate with and schedule any additional interpretive resources.
• Possible opportunity to teach ASL
• Must pass CHRC from the Department of Education
