Job Summary:
At the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences, teachers engage in collaborative, hands-on learning that puts the student at the center of the experience. Whether it be through two-week agro forestry intensives or collaborative projects in the classroom, all educators are expected to embrace innovative, engaging practices that harness student interests and produce meaningful, real-world results and products. The ideal Social Studies candidate at MeANS is an experienced and innovative educator who values project-based learning in a non-traditional environment and is passionate about educating students on the role civic engagement can play in creating change in our community. At MeANS we value autonomy, flexibility, and student-driven projects that engage a wide variety of learners and help them connect academic content to their lives and values as young adults.
Duties and Responsibilities:
? Create project-based curricula integrated with our school’s themes of agriculture, forestry and the environment.
? Provide direct instruction in multiple sections of Geography, U.S. History, and two-week Natural Science intensives.
? Help to develop and implement student presentations and reflections on individual and collaborative learning.
? Serve as an advisor for a small group of students by supporting them daily with career and college preparation.
? Participate in weekly faculty and professional development meetings.
? Develop, research, and assess student academic growth in a method that is congruent with how they learn.
? Support students interested in increasing their scores on college related tests such as the Accuplacer, SATs and Advanced Placement exams.
? Share all duties with other staff such as lunch and elective supervision.
? Employ restorative practices to build community and address student behavior.
? Facilitate student-led conferences for advisees while developing quarterly progress reports.
? Contact advisees’ parents on a weekly basis updating them on student progress.
? Interest and enthusiasm for improving skills by attending professional development opportunities.
? Other duties as they are assigned.
Qualifications:
? 3-5 years of experience working with students in a social studies classroom is preferred.
? Certification in History, Social Studies, Civics, or an advanced degree.
? Satisfactory reference and background checks.
? A valid Maine driver’s license.
