Long-term Substitute - K-2, Special Education Teacher, Resource Room, November 2024 - June 2025

The Brewer School Department is seeking to fill a full time long-term substitute position for a Special Education Resource Room Teacher at Brewer Community School. The Special Education Department at BCS is uniquely supported with a full time IEP Coordinator assigned to assist with routine case management / IDEA requirements, as well as the coordination of programs and services. It is also supported by seasoned paraprofessionals, a full time BCBA, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, a Licensed Psychologist as well as Life Skills and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs at each grade level. The structure of special education duties in Brewer is designed to promote and protect instructional time for student achievement. Resource Room teachers at BCS provide direct instruction in core content areas (reading, writing and math) as well as supportive consultation for students with executive functioning / functional needs.

A desirable candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • State of Maine Special Education Certification 282 (or eligible/working toward) and CHRC
  • Knowledge of state and federal special education regulations and IEP procedures
  • Ability to interpret psychological and academic evaluations and incorporate findings and recommendations into IEPs and classroom instruction
  • Ability to plan instruction and assessment to align with IEP goals and targeted standards 
  • Ability to coordinate, lead and facilitate IEP meetings, and complete necessary paperwork
  • Experience completing special education academic evaluations and screening procedures
  • Experience integrating technology into instruction to meet various student needs
  • Experience designing and implementing positive behavior intervention plans
  • Experience supervising paraprofessional schedules and assignments is preferred
  • Excellent communication, time management, and organization skills
  • Flexibility, collaboration, and the ability to deliver specialized group instruction
  • Knowledge of various disabilities that may impact academic and functional performance
  • Experience delivering scientifically research based reading interventions is preferred
