Salary: $156/day
SUMMARY: Assesses students requiring the direct services of a registered nurse. Prepares health care plans for involved students and supervises the implementation of required health care procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.
Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
Instructs teachers on screening students for health defects
Administers medication and treatment prescribed by physicians
Conducts parent conferences and maintains liaison between physicians, parents and staff.
Makes recommendations to primary care physician on health needs of individual students.
Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students requiring nursing intervention.
Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other agencies on student health matters.
Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
Implements board policy on exclusion and re admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases
Conducts training for students related to handicap, health and hygiene.
Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
Prepares statistical reports as required by Dept. of Education, Department of Human Services and Superintendent.
Helps in the formation of school health policies, goals and objectives
Prepares a budget for school health needs.
Serves on the Pupil Evaluation Team when student health problems are involved.
Arranges for the exclusion of students in connection with possible infestations and contagious diseases.
Monitors current immunization level of all students as required by Maine law.
Takes part in the health aspect of kindergarten registration
Manages the school health services under the direction of the Superintendent and Principal, in compliance with school district policy.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.
Functions in accordance with the Standards of Professional School Nursing Practice, the Nurse Practice Act, and Federal and State statutes that impact school nursing practice.
Provides information to the School Committee and school administrators as they develop school health policies and procedures.
Provides health-related training to school personnel.
Provides preventive health services to students including health education, screening, consultation and referrals.
Provides nursing assessments and nursing diagnoses and develops plans of care for students needing health and nursing interventions.
Implements interventions within the plan of care directly, through delegation, or through the provision of oversight and coordination to other responsible staff based on consideration of health, safety, and welfare of the student.
Coordinates in-school health care with the student’s primary care physician, the school-based health center, and other providers/staff as necessary and appropriate.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's or associate's degree in nursing. Experience with handicapped children.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
License from the State of Maine to practice as a Registered Nurse and proper Department of Education certification.
