Position Overview
The Head Coach of the Boys Varsity Ice Hockey team is responsible for leading the program in all aspects, from fostering team culture to managing daily operations and collaborating with coaches, staff, and students. This role demands strong leadership, organizational skills, and a passion for developing student-athletes both on and off the ice. The Head Coach plays a vital role in creating an environment that emphasizes growth, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
responsibilities
- Cultivate a positive, mission-aligned team culture by developing and articulating clear expectations and guidelines to players and their families.
- Work closely with the Director of Athletics and Admissions Office to identify, recruit, and guide prospective student-athletes through the application and enrollment process.
- Design daily practice plans that maximize both time and instructional quality.
- Work with athletes of varying skill levels to help them achieve and exceed their potential.
- Work with the Director of Athletics and College Counseling office to assist student-athletes in developing a college list and communicating with college coaches.
Administration of program
- Assist the Director of Athletics in organizing competition schedules and coordinating tournament participation.
- Attend NEPSAC/league meetings, including the annual coaches’ meeting.
- Collaborate with the Assistant AD to manage vehicle and transportation logistics for away competitions and tournaments.
- Maintain a record of accurate team and individual statistics throughout the season, ensuring the team scorebook is completed after each game and returned upon the completion of the season.
- Upload game footage to Hudl and provide video analysis to players for development.
- Work with the Athletic Department to manage the distribution and collection of school-issued apparel and equipment.
- Contribute to the end-of-season awards ceremony.
Daily responsibilities
- Attend all practices and games, ensuring consistent leadership and oversight.
- Manage and update team rosters, including tryouts, cuts, and swing players.
- Submit game summaries to the Assistant AD within 24 hours for website posting.
- Track and record attendance at all practices, games, and team events.
- Text game results to the Director of Athletics, Assistant AD, and Athletic Trainer within one hour of game completion.
- Post all game results on USHR.
- Immediately report any significant game infractions, such as misconduct, excessive penalties, or ejections, to the Director of Athletics.
Qualifications
- Prior experience coaching hockey at the high school or collegiate level.
Strong understanding of the rules governing the sport, including NEPSAC/Holt Conference rules/regulations.
Ability to manage all aspects of a high school athletic program, with a focus on safety, performance, and student-athlete development.
